Top tips for writing your student CV

So there are some big dos and don'ts for writing your CV - we’ve made a list of our best tips to try and help you to create the best CV possible which will make you stand out from the crowd:

  • Use a specific template - don’t just write it in a haphazard manner
  • Try and keep to one or two sides of A4 - employers get vast amounts of CVs submitted so you need to be concise because the reality is they just won’t read it otherwise
  • Change the ‘profile’ section for each job you apply for - don’t just regurgitate the same over and over again - you need to sell yourself to the specific employer, not just employers in general.
  • Be unique - use the ‘interests’ section to show your personality. If you’re a bit of a daredevil let people know - just be honest and don’t pretend to be anything you’re not because you’ll get caught out. Use positive comments in this such as ‘I’m not scared of a challenge, demonstrated when I went skydiving…’
  • NEVER lie about your grades - if you’re found out they won’t be impressed and no one wants a liar in their organisation.
  • Get other people to read your CV - ideally if you know someone in the industry/organisation you’re trying to get into ask them for feedback as they’ll know what the organisation wants to see.
  • Check again, and again, and again for spelling mistakes - otherwise it looks like you really don’t care and didn’t even take the time to check it.
