Getting Through Exams

So exams and essay deadlines are coming up over the next few weeks - for freshers it will probably be the first experience of exams at uni but everyone else should pretty much know what to expect.

The most important thing is to try and be as prepared as possible to ensure there aren't any nasty surprises and you aren't sat there for 2 hours staring at the ceiling and all other students writing frantically around you. First year exams don't usually count towards your degree so you don't need to stress too much about them but it's useful to try and get a half decent mark so that you know how much revision is needed for a 2:1, First etc.

You can check out our student revision tips for help and advice for your revision. Most students struggle with a lack of sleep during the exam period as they try to cram and do all of the revision over a few days. This is also the case for essay deadlines - try and find a student who hasn't stayed up half the night frantically trying to finish in time for the deadline. The best way to stay awake and keep focused is to take a break every hour or 2 for a few minutes, make yourself a coffee or tea (both high in caffeine) or take a couple of Pro Plus tablets. Pro Plus is great because it gives you a decent shot of caffeine in tablet form and makes you feel pretty lively. I've lived on Pro Plus and caffeine for a couple of weeks - not a good diet but it got me through the exams. Make sure you try and have as much fruit and veg during your exam period as possible. Why? - well all of the vitamins and minerals will help to keep your diet from dropping off a cliff and should help you to stay well. It's really easy to get ill during exams due to the stress, lack of sleep and poor diet. Taking in minerals and vitamins will really make a difference.

Stress and poor diet during exam time can also cause you to get more spots than normal - try and have a few glasses of water a day and wash your face both after you've woken up and before you go to bed. Doing this should help you to keep a healthy complexion and make you feel better about yourself.

We've created some quick, simple and cheap student recipes which might be worth a try - don't let yourself go and just eat pizza and canned food for 2 weeks. You'll notice your concentration will be better if you have a half decent diet during your uni exams and the recipes really don't take very long which means you won't be using up precious revision time.

Good luck from the team at Money4Students over the next few weeks. If you have any questions on getting through exams at university you can 'Ask an Expert' by contacting info@money4students.co.uk.
