Food In Season

Student Health main

Fruit & Veg:
food in seasonNow we’re heading into the colder months of October and November there are loads of veg in season you can use in things like stews and soups. Parsnips one of the vegetables in season and are very versatile - you can basically cook them in the same way as you would for potatoes. They're great roasted and go a lovely golden brown colour, you can also mash them with carrots and have it on the side of your main. Alternatively make them into a lovely creamy soup by blending them and adding some cream and seasoning - pretty simple and cheap!

Other vegetables in season include: pumpkins (unsurprisingly considering the amount you see at Halloween!), cabbage, potatoes, leeks and pears. Fantastic news as most of them are pretty cheap so you can save yourself some cash on your student shopping.

Meat & Fish:
seasonal food Lamb is the main meat in season coming into Autumn. It tends to have a bit more flavour than lamb you buy in Spring as the meat is actually more mature - thus more flavour. It's a great partner to veg such as parsnips and potatoes (great news!). You should find lamb readily available at university towns across the UK - it's best to roast it or get a nice cut and grill it. Because it's in season you should also find it's cheaper than at other times of the year - look out for bright red meat together with white fat as this shows that it's still very fresh.
