How Important is a CV?

So is my CV really that important?

In reality you’re the book and your CV is the cover - and the truth of it is that people do judge a book by it’s cover.

Your CV is the first thing that any potential employers will see about you and you need to make an impact. Whether you’re applying for a bar job or applying for a job after uni it’s the same - there are thousands of students across the UK all going for the same jobs.

Writing your CV shouldn’t be something you do in an hour - you should put the time into making it perfect if you want to secure that job and no doubt it will payoff in the long term. It’s a great idea to ask your mates and even tutors to read your CV and give feedback - we’re all pretty blinded when it comes to reading our own stuff. What makes sense to you may not make sense to other people, you know what you’re trying to say but does the person reading the CV hear the same thing??

You’ll continually have new experiences and skills you can add to your CV so make sure you read it every now and then to ensure it’s up to date. This will show your employers that you care about the student job you’re applying for rather than just giving them a piece of paper. Use your CV to say ‘This is me, this is how good I am, this is why I’m right for the job and this is why you don’t need anyone else for the job - I have the skills, the grades and the personality for the job’.
