TOTAL COST: £0.84

TIME TO MAKE: 15 mins

All costs are calculated using mysupermarket which finds you the best price for groceries online

What you need:

  • 125g Macaroni pasta (60p/500g)
  • 25g Butter (£1/250g)
  • 25g Plain flour (35p/500g)
  • 300ml Milk (40p/568ml)
  • 50g cheddar cheese (£1.60/250g)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  •

    What to do:

    • Warm the butter in a saucepan until melted. Stir in the flour and heat for 2mins, stirring constantly on a low-medium temperature.
    • Next start to gradually add the milk to the mix, very slowly and stirring all the time to prevent lumps from forming.
    • When all the milk has been added, continue heating the mix until the sauce has thickened. Continue to stir to prevent lumps.
    • When the sauce is smooth and has thickened, add most of the cheese and melt into the sauce. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
    • While the sauce is being made cook the macaroni in boiling water as directed on the packet. Then drain and add to the thickened sauce.
    • Put the macaroni cheese mix into a greased oven-proof dish, sprinkle over the rest of the cheese and put under a hot grill for a couple of minutes until the cheese turns to a golden brown.

    Make it healthier:

    1) Use skimmed or semi skimmed milk
    2) Use reduced fat cheese
