Staying Healthy

We've teamed up with to bring you a great guide to staying well at uni.

How to stay healthy while you’re studying

You’re at your youngest and most vibrant stage of adult life, but somehow you find yourself putting on weight and feeling generally unhealthy. If this is you, then you’re not alone. In America they call it the “Freshman 15” – the 15lbs you’re likely to put on in your first student year!

Students typically eat cheap, stodgy food, don't eat enough fresh fruit and vegetables and pile on the sugar and calories when downing booze and soft drinks. Whether you’re starting out or finding it hard to recognise yourself in the mirror, mySupermarket's handy tips will help you stay trim, whilst at uni:

1. Stick to three meals a day – The first key to healthy eating is to ensure that you have three proper meals each day. Skip one and you’ll end up hungry and looking for snacks. Start the day with a proper breakfast, take time out for a sandwich or salad for lunch, and have a proper cooked dinner in the evening.

2. Pick healthy ready meals – Students are always short of time and like the ease of sticking a meal in the microwave or oven. This is fine, but pick carefully.mySupermarket allows you to view the calorie count and traffic lights as you shop so you can pick the healthiest option. E.g. Select a Tesco Value Sheppard’s Pie rather than the regular one and you’ll save 20 calories as well as fat and saturated fat.

3. Shop Online – To avoid filling your larder with snacks like crisps, chocolate and doughnuts, do your weekly shop online at mySupermarket and stick to your list. By avoiding the supermarket altogether, you won’t be tempted by these naughty treats. But don’t be too harsh on yourself – let yourself have the occasional treat! Use the mySupermarket Health Checker to see whether you could be picking slightly healthier snacks. It won’t bore you by suggesting you switch a doughnut for a banana but will suggest things like swapping McVitie’s Chocolate Digestives for the light version to save 84 calories and 18g fat.

4. Buy plenty of fresh fruit and veg – Students sometimes fall into the trap of buying less fresh food because it seems pricy. Don’t be fooled. You will never get better value for money than by making sure you get your 5 a day. Be smart though – go through the special offers each week and buy whatever is on offer. mySupermarket has a page with all the Offers in one place to make it easier. One week might be apples and kiwis, the next oranges and strawberries.

5. Exercise regularly – Find something you enjoy, don’t be overly ambitious, and stick to your routine. Joining a gym gives you the financial incentive to go, but isn’t the only way to go. Take regular brisk walks, or join one of the many university sports societies. Pool and darts don’t count!
