Drugs

First things first, this is the UK law position on drugs:

Class A’s (Hallucinogens, Ecstasy, Heroin, Cocaine): You can earn yourself up to 7 years in prison or a fine, or both, for possession. If you are found to be supplying be prepared to be locked up for life.

Class B’s (Amphetamines): You can earn yourself up to 5 years in prison or a fine, or both, for possession. For supplying you can risk up to 14 years in prison and/or a fine.

Class C’s (Cannabis and some prescribed medications): You can earn yourself up to 2 years in prison or a fine, or both, for possession. Supplying can earn you 5 years in prison and/or a fine. Cannabis law is still quite murky so be warned, the sentences could be stiffer.

This is the law but like many other UK laws, people break them. We DO NOT encourage the use of drugs, but would like to offer advice with drugs.

  • If you are your mate have a nasty effect from drugs, get to hospital and get it sorted out. Tell the doctors what drug has been taken as it will make their job a million times easier and help to sort out the effect before its too late. Worry about the consequences later, because at this point it is vital you get help, and the correct help.
  • If your using cannabis and it starts to effect your studies, think about what its doing to you and cut down if you need to (if you’re not going to stop).
  • Remember that just because you know people who have taken drugs and have come out fine, it doesn’t mean the same will happen to you. You could have a bad ‘trip’ and by taking some drugs you are risking your life.
  • Don’t let people pressure you into anything, there’s enough people at Uni who don’t do drugs for you not to feel like the odd one out.
  • Like everything else in life, it’s your choice what you do (and don’t do) but just remember your not only risking your life, you’re risking a prison sentence. A criminal record is really going to restrict the job you get in life, and you can wave goodbye to a degree.
